Animal of the week: A of Armadillo

Grubs basic diet. Most armadillo species forage in the early morning and evening hours for a variety of invertebrates and insects, including beetles, grubs, and worms. Because, like many burrowing animals, armadillos tend to have extremely poor eyesight, their hunting skills rely on their abilities to smell their food.
Two species, the northern naked-tailed armadillo and nine-banded armadillo, are found in Central America; the latter has also reached the United States, primarily in the south-central states (notably Texas), but with a range that extends as far east as South Carolina and Florida.
In fact, only the three-banded armadillo can, curling its head and back feet and contorting its shell into a hard ball that confounds would-be predators. Armadillos live in temperate and warm habitats, including rain forests, grasslands, and semi-deserts

Skipper in the Garage

This is Skipper.

Skipper is lucky that she is in the garage because she is usually is not allowed to stay in the garage. Sometimes she is allowed to go in when we are in the garage, when it is raining sometime we let her in,or if it is cold snowy or icey we let her in to. Most of the time she likes it better outside. We love her so much.

Animal of the week: A of Alpaca

Alpaca

Scienntific name: Vicugna pacos

Average Height: 2.7 – 3.2 ft. (Adult, At the withers)

Average Weight: 110 – 190 lbs (Adult)

Today we are learning about the alpaca which has been tamed and would be considered a farm animal in many areas.  An alpaca (Vicugna pacos) first came from South American.

The alpaca has long hair and is a mammal.  It is related to and looks like a llama.  It is used mostly for its wool.   There are two types of alpaca – the Surialpaca and the Huacaya alpaca

Occasionally you will find an alpaca in a zoo or on a farm.  They are fun to watch and touch

Animal of the week: A of Alligator

Length:  American alligator: 11 – 15 ft., Chinese alligator: 4.9 ft
The nest can be up to ten feet (2.1 to 3 m) in diameter and up to three feet high. Around late June and early July, the female lays up to 90 eggs. The eggs are then covered with the vegetation nest through the 65-day incubation period.
When young, alligators eat fish, insects, snails, crustaceans, and worms. As they mature, they start eating larger animals, including larger fish such as gar, turtles, and various mammals,  coypu and muskrat, as well as birds, deer, and other reptiles.
Their stomachs also often contain gizzard stones. Southern Florida is the only place where both alligators and crocodiles live together. American alligators live in freshwater environments, such as ponds, marshes, wetlands, rivers, lakes, and swamp environments.

Animal of the week: A of Anteater

Anteater is a common name for the four mammal species who are known for eating ants and termites. Anteaters live primarily in Central and South America.   They enjoy tropical forests and grassland ecosystems.  The four main types are different sizes. The silky anteater is the size of a squirrel and the giant anteater can reach 7 feet (2.1 meters) long (measuring from the tip of its nose to the end of its tail).

 According to National Geographic, anteaters will eat around 35,000 ants and termites whole everyday.  About.com states that they also eat other grubs and insects occasionally as well. Each anteater species has its own insect preference.

Hollywild Family Fun!

My family spent time at Hollywild!  It is a great to visit in the Greenville area if you enjoy animals.  They have a lot of different animals, even a petting zoo with farm animals.  It is a fun to go with your family.

What I Want To Be When I Grow Up

This is a picture of me and my twin sister, Karlie, petting our first dog Dargo.  He was a good dog and let us do anything to him.  He made me giggle!

What I Want To Be When I Grow Up…..

I want to be a vet or zookeeper when I grow up.  I may only be 11 years old, but I have been excited about having an opportunity to work with animals when I am an adult.   I love animals!  Any animal!  One of my favorite activities is spending time with animals.  Anytime I get to hang out with animals I am happy.  Working with animals is a lot of fun.

I am always looking for ways to train my dog Skipper.  For special treats to make for her.  Recently I made a “pupsicle” for her.  It is a homemade popsicle, but for a dog (I may share more about it later).  I have also worked on training my goats, they are a little more stubborn to train.  It is always an adventure to figure out which plants that they enjoy munching on for a snack.  It doesn’t matter what kind of animal it is I love them all.

I think every animal is special.  Each has it’s own neat things about them.  Animals like people often respond better when they know you care and offer positive words with them.  I look forward to learning more about animals throughout the next few years and figuring out how I will work with animals when I grow up.  I would love to have a huge farm or ranch as an adult with as many animals as I can afford.  My favorite adventures and activities usually involve some type of interaction with animals!
